What you will do! 

In the Veterinary Technician I role, you will use established quality standards and operating procedures to perform a variety of tasks, including preparation and distribution of individualized animal diets, enrichment, and clinical treatments; collection and recording of physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.); calculating drug dosages and administration frequencies; and basic animal behavior training techniques, including positive reinforcement training and cognitive testing. You may be asked to perform animal health surveillance checks and report abnormal conditions, as well as assisting in the collection of on-going behavioral testing and data collection. You may also be responsible for weekly mid-day health checks and daily pm health checks of all animals in the colony (including geriatric rhesus monkeys), as well as composing daily emails communicating animal clinical and experimental information to Core and veterinary staff. 

As a VTI, you will work cooperatively with animal care staff, co-workers, veterinary staff, supervisors, and others regarding a range of technical issues, including performing procedures such as femoral blood collection, IV catheterization, aseptic tissue collection and processing, euthanasia, anesthesia, food or liquid consumption, drug administration (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV and ID), TB testing, weighing, physical examinations, restraint and handling of animals, radiographs, and other technical procedures as needed. You may also be tasked with assisting the veterinarian or investigators with surgeries or specialized procedures; maintaining electronic medical records and updating treatment plans; participating in study-related necropsies and tissue harvest; as well as the collection, preservation, and preparation of blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples (includes ability to maintain freezer organization and sample inventory).
